Rilsan is a unique bio based high performance polyamide, synthesized from castor oil -Ricinnus Communis- i.e., it is of vegetal origin, not of fossil origin to prevent corrosion on metal goods.. As a plastic made from renewable resources, it reduces the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere.
Rilsan is a thermoplastic and it has different features than other commonly used industrial coatings, thermosetting -epoxy, polyester. During the coating process Rilsan does not reticulate, instead, there is a fusion onto the substrate to be coated. The special feature which allows an easy quality control of the coating because melting can be observed by naked eye, while thermosetting involve a chemical reaction and thus, it has to be complete to reach the expected coating quality.
The thermosetting are hard coatings but more fragile and less resistant to abrasion and wear than thermoplastics. It has a density between 104 and 125 g/ml, lower than other powder coatings – epoxy, polyester- which entails a higher performance and an easier control of the coating thickness.
